The greatest revival preacher that the Highlands ever produced was John MacDonald of Ferintosh, a parish in the Synod of Moray and Ross. Scholarly, proficient in English and fluent in Gaelic, he possessed a golden heart and a silver tongue. Ordained a minister of the Church of Scotland, he ministered within its bounds, though readily preaching in the open air, often to crowds of up to 10,000.

In his meetings ‘the groans and outcries of the stricken ones sometimes drowning the voice of the preacher.’ In the parish of Breadalbane, where Robert Finlater was the minister, there were the first stirrings of spiritual concern in 1812, which developed into a full-scale revival through MacDonald’s preaching; the revival continued from 1816 to around 1820.
