The term "Great Awakening" was first used in the writing of American history in the 19th century by this Protestant minister, Joseph Tracy.

His book, 'The Great Awakening: A History of the Revival of Religion in the Time Of Edwards and Whitefield,' describes the period from 1739 to 1745, when evangelical revivalism swept through New England and the Middle Colonies, affecting thousands of people from every walk of life.

George Whitefield, the most famous of the itinerant ministers, spoke to gatherings of 15,000 people in open air meetings in Philadelphia and Boston. Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, Gilbert Tennent, and dozens of others preached a powerful message which resulted in deep conviction and masses of authentic conversions.

Tracy's massive work is the most comprehensive account of the major 18th century revival. It is an excellent, fully searchable pdf facsimile, 454 pages
